Bitcoin and gold are 2026's worst-performing assets, and history offers no precedent

Bitcoin is down 7.3% and gold is down 7.5% in 2026 through October 23, making them the two worst-performing major assets of the year according to Creative Planning's Charlie Bilello. Gold fell from a record near $5,595 in January to $3,995.81 on Friday, while Bitcoin trades near $80,472, about 36% below its October record of $126,198. Higher interest rates from the Federal Reserve have weighed on both assets, which don't pay interest, marking a sharp reversal from Bitcoin's 121% gain in 2024 and gold's 63.7% gain in 2025.
