Bitcoin (BTC) Wallets : Electrum Wallet Patches Attack That Hid Theft Behind Fee Increases
Electrum wallet released version 4.8.3 on October 24, 2026, patching a high-severity vulnerability that allowed attackers controlling servers to intercept and redirect Bitcoin payments. The attack worked by replacing a user's signed transaction with a fraudulent one in local history, then triggering a fee increase via Replace-By-Fee to broadcast the attacker's version instead of the original. Attackers used address spoofing (matching final four characters) and zero-fee transactions to avoid detection; the fix requires client-side signature verification on unconfirmed outgoing transactions.
