ECB official sees digital euro as key to protecting EU 'sovereignty'
ECB Executive Board member Piero Cipollone said a digital euro pilot launching next year would give the EU sovereignty over payments infrastructure currently dependent on non-European third parties. Cipollone noted two-thirds of euro-area card transactions are governed by non-European companies, and the digital euro could reduce this dependence and provide European-controlled infrastructure. The ECB Governing Council can only decide on issuing a digital euro after legislative negotiations conclude, with hopes for regulation adoption by year-end.
