Epidemic of Hacked Freezers Spreads Across Europe
Hackers compromised refrigeration systems across nine European countries, forcing defrost cycles that spoiled food and caused fires at supermarkets including chains like Carrefour, Coop, and Intermarché. The attack targeted remote control modules made by Danfoss and Copeland, with French authorities identifying about 700 affected supermarkets out of 10,000 nationally. Researchers identified authentication bypass flaws in Danfoss AK-SM 800A controllers published in August; 2,765 such devices were found exposed online before patches were released.
