Scientists identify a new manta ray species in the Atlantic after 15 years of debate, using DNA evidence, skin patterns and tooth differences

Scientists have formally identified a new manta ray species in the Atlantic Ocean after 15 years of debate, using DNA evidence, skin patterns, and tooth differences to distinguish it from two closely related species. The new species has distinctive stellate-shaped dermal denticles, V-shaped patches above the gills, and different tooth row counts (9-13) compared to related species. The species faces threats from fishing bycatch, boat strikes, entanglement, and habitat degradation in Atlantic oceanic islands, archipelagos, and coastal regions.
