South Korea Considers Delaying Crypto Tax Guidelines to 2029 as Ruling Party Backs Postponement
South Korea's ruling Democratic Party formally requested postponing cryptocurrency income taxation from January 1, 2027 to around 2029, citing need for a comprehensive Digital Asset Basic Act first. Party leader Kim Min-seok stated the delay would allow companies and investors time to adjust and enable completion of infrastructure work including overseas transaction information systems. This marks the fourth postponement since the tax was first written into law in 2020; gains over 2.5 million won annually would face a combined 22% tax rate under existing rules.
