Switching from Character.ai in 2026

Character.ai filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on October 12, 2026, with about 12 million monthly users. Disney offered $20 million for permission to use some of Character.ai's technology, but this does not include the app or chats. Users can export their data as a backup (taking 3-4 weeks) or recreate characters on Venice Characters, which requires Venice Pro at $18/month.
