Zcash is about to freeze $16 million in its oldest privacy pool
Zcash network upgrade NU7 scheduled for Thursday will freeze approximately $16 million in the Sprout privacy pool by rejecting version-4 transactions, making remaining coins unspendable even for owners with private keys. About 12,226 ZEC remained in Sprout as of Thursday morning, down from 22,263 a week earlier, with users having less than 24 hours to withdraw before the deadline. NU7 upgrade also reduces block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, and developers note that keeping Sprout running adds complexity and security risks to the network.
